| Ánte Mikkel Gaup has his roots in the northern Saami joik tradition of inner Finnmark, the area of Guovdageaidny/Kautokeino. (Joik is the traditional vocal music of the indigenous Saami people.) He is a much sought-after joiker, who has performed at the Bergen International Festival, the Førde International Folk Music Festival, the Saami Easter Festival in Kautokeino, and many other venues. He appears as a solo artist or together with his family, Lena Susanne, Lars Áilo and Sara Marielle Gaup. They entertain, teach and present Saami culture. Their programme can include storytelling, lectures, concerts, dramatisations and shadow theatre with and about “Juffá”. Audiences can also experience the legends of the Saami constellations during a programme featuring joik inside a mobile planetarium, called Nástegoahti. Ánte Mikkel Gaup teaches extensively at institutions including the Tromsø Music Conservatory, the Ole Bull Academy and the Rauland Academy. In 2002 he released the CD Ritnivuovddis luodit – Joikar i rimskogen |
